Sh2-119, the Clamshell Nebula, is an emission nebula and star-forming region in Cygnus, roughly 2,200 light-years away and about 2 degrees across. It was first photographed in the early 1950s by Grigory Shajn and Vera Gaze and cataloged in more detail by Stewart Sharpless in 1959.

Why is it called the Clamshell Nebula?

The nebula's ionizing star, 68 Cygni, sits between two curved lobes of glowing gas, an eastern half and a western half, forming a shape that resembles a clamshell hinged open around the star. This structure comes from the Strömgren sphere the star's ultraviolet radiation carves into the surrounding hydrogen gas.

What star powers the Clamshell Nebula?

68 Cygni, a hot blue giant of spectral type O7.5, one of the more luminous O-type stars in this part of the galaxy. It's also a documented runaway star, moving through space at roughly 59 kilometers per second faster than its surroundings, likely the result of a past supernova in a former companion star or a close encounter in a dense cluster.

Is 6 hours enough integration for Sh2-119 on a DWARF 3?

It's enough to clearly resolve the core structure and both lobes, but not enough to fully bring out the nebula's faint outer extent. At roughly 2 degrees across, Sh2-119 spreads the same total signal over a much larger area than a compact nebula would, which lowers the effective depth per square arcminute for a given integration time.
